What's in a name?

What has 'Wild Trout' to do with a jewellery store? That's a good question, one we often get asked...

It's true, our name was inspired by a beautiful fish with colours like fine jewels.

It's also true Dave is a mad keen fly fishing fan!

What's your favourite gem stone?

ring3

I like most fine gems, expertly cut by craftsmen to show off their fine beauty. Whether it be cornflower blue sapphires from Sri Lanka or Pigeon Blood Rubies which display the most wonderful phosphorescence.

I also love the birthstone for March, cool ice blue Aquamarine.

Getting married... Gold, White Gold or Platinum?

At the moment Platinum is a great choice. Platinum is a hard white metal that keeps its bright colour and doesn't need to be rhodium plated or polished regularly to keep it looking its best.

Also due to the current high gold price, the cost difference is less than 10%. Not long ago Platinum was twice the cost of 18ct gold!

Any unusual requests?

We take pride in everything we do and although we predominantly produce fine jewellery, we do get some unusual requests too.

One that springs to mind was a case for a bullet recovered from the Battle of Waterloo. Another was a silver scent bottle designed for a television personality. We like the unusual - in fact we thrive on it.

Repairs Advice

“Like the old saying goes, ‘A stitch in time saves 9’. So it is with jewellery. If you notice something not quite right or loose, its best to get it fixed straight away”.

Just like anything we wear on a daily basis, jewellery, rings and chains in particular should be regularly checked for signs of wear and weakness.

The true beauty of a precious stone is often masked by small particles of dirt, which often hides problem areas around the setting.

If claws are worn they can be re-tipped or replaced, links can be built up, and failing all that if something is old and really worn we can remake it exactly as before, or with a modern twist.

What can you tell me about rhodium plating?

Rhodium is a metal in the platinum group and is very rare, so rare in fact that we only ever use it for fine plating. Its special properties being harder than gold and brighter and whiter than almost any other metal.

Why do we need to do this?

Pure Gold is yellow. By adding other metals we increase its working properties and make it more durable. Depending which metals we use, we can also change the colour. For example, adding palladium makes white gold. However the white colour achieved is dark and is therefore rhodium plated to give a much more pleasing colour.

After getting the repair treatment, this ring was rhodium plated to spectacular effect.

How long does it take?

Wild Trout can rhodium plate your jewellery as part of a ‘Same-Day’ service.

What’s the best way to care for Pearls?

“Jewellery doesn’t last forever but with care and regular checks it can last a lifetime or two”

Wild Trout Jewellery - Best value Autore Pearls in Sydney
A great selection of beautiful Autore and South Sea Pearl jewellery in-store.

Pearls are a special gift of nature, to ensure lasting pleasure and prevent accidental damage, follow these guidelines:

  • Store your Pearls separately.
  • Try not to knock your Pearls against sharp or hard surfaces.
  • Do not drop Pearls into handbags etc. without first placing them in their pouch.
  • After each wear, wipe your Pearls with a soft damp cloth to remove any build up of body oils or perspiration.
  • Occasionally clean your Pearls in warm water using a mild pure soap – not detergent.
  • Rinse and pat dry thoroughly with a soft clean cloth before storing.
  • Pearls should never have contact with detergents, bleach, cleaning solutions or sonic cleaners.
  • Try to avoid direct contact with perfume, makeup, shampoo and hairspray which can all eat away the lustre of your pearls.
  • Restring your Pearls every 1 or 2 years. Ensure they are knotted separately to prevent scratching.
  • Pearls thrive on moisture, so avoid this by storing in a very dry place or jewel purse.
  • Do the right thing and your Pearls will become an heirloom, worn lovingly for generations to come.
Pearl re-stringing is available at the Workshop - Open 6 days

What is the difference between freshwater and South Sea Pearls?

150px-White_pearl_necklace

Both varieties are cultured pearls, grown in an oyster shell with a little help from mankind. Freshwater pearls are relatively cheap to produce in shallow water and don't grow to the size or obtain the lustre of the South Sea Pearls.

South Sea Pearls are notoriously difficult to produce, because the oysters which produce them are found in the deep pristine waters of Northern Australia, often troubled by cyclones and tsunamis.

Why do gemstones fall out?

Slight knocking or even just the process of wearing can cause a setting to shift or flex, if it does this, then the result could be that the stone becomes loose.

One of gold’s properties which make’s it so ideal for jewellery is its softness, but as gold is a lot softer than diamond, a loose diamond will wear away a gold setting until there is insufficient metal to hold the stone in place.

Remember to inspect your jewellery on a regular basis, and keep them nice and clean.

How often should I re-plate my jewellery?

Pendants, earrings and chains should only ever have to be plated once in their lifetime, although this would have to be reapplied after any repairs.

Rings and bracelets which are subject to more wear should be done more regularly.
We recommend once a year or for a special occasion.

In between, using Hagerty jewellery cleaner will keep your jewellery looking spectacular.
